A change order is a simple document: what's changing, why, what it affects, and how much it costs. You don't need legal software — a clear email or PDF works. The key is getting the client's explicit approval before you start work.

Strategy 4: Show the Impact, Not Just the Price
'That change costs $500' sounds arbitrary. 'That change affects 3 existing features and adds 2 days of work' sounds justified. Always explain the impact before stating the price.

When you can say 'this change modifies requirements #4, #7, and #12, and requires updating the export logic', the client understands they're not just paying for your time — they're paying for the ripple effect.
Strategy 5: Build a 'Not Included' List
Every project should have two lists: what you're building, and what you're explicitly NOT building. 'Not included: mobile app, multi-language support, payment processing, admin user management.' This prevents the most insidious form of scope creep: the client assuming something was always part of the deal.
